Welcome to October Skills Facts. It’s been a busy month here at Skills Tasmania with several new grant funding programs announced. Our Tasmanian Training Awards finalists will head to Adelaide for the Australian Training Awards next month, so we wish them all the best. Enjoy the read.

2023 Apprentice and Trainee Training Fund is now open

The 2023 Apprentice and Trainee Training Fund is now open to eligible training organisations to provide subsided training of apprentice and trainees across the state.

The Apprentice and Trainee Training Fund significantly reduces the cost of providing dedicated vocational training for apprentices and trainees to build a more highly skilled workforce in Tasmania. More than 400 nationally recognised qualifications are available for funding.

Building a Skilled Workforce – Existing Worker Fund now open

The Building a Skilled Workforce – Existing Worker Fund is now open to eligible training providers to deliver nationally recognised training in either skills sets or qualifications for existing workers.

The subsidised training will help employees gain skills and knowledge to assist them to perform their jobs more effectively, efficiently, safely and confidently. New skills and knowledge for employees also supports future career planning and progression.

The 2023 Building a Skilled Workforce – Existing Worker Fund replaces the former Skills Fund.

The grant round is open until Friday 25 November 2022 at 2.00pm (AEDT). For further information go to the Skills Tasmania website

2022 Successful Training and Work Pathways Program projects

Successful applicants for the 2022 Training and Work Pathways Program (TWPP) have been announced.

New Jobs Tasmania Career Connector for job seekers

Career Connector is a new service from Jobs Tasmania giving job seekers the help they need to take the next step towards employment.

The service gives personalised career advice and support to access training, local Jobs Hubs, employment opportunities, service providers and other programs they might be eligible for.

The service is available for those who has lost their job or been made redundant in the last 12 months, young people 18-25 years and those aged 45+ who have been out of the workforce for 12 months or more as well as migrants who have been residing in Tasmania for more than 6 months, have working rights and are unemployed or underemployed.

The service is being delivered by two providers: Youth, Family and Community Connections (North-West and West Coast) and Searson Buck (South, North and North-East).

2022 Australian Training Awards

In mid-November the 2022 Tasmanian Training Awards Team made up of this year’s state category winners will represent Tasmania at the Australian Training Awards.

The team includes:

  • Jack Wilson – Apprentice
  • Natasha Robins – Trainee
  • Nathan Pitchford – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student
  • Fleur Thomas – Vocational Student
  • Abbey Quinn – School-based Apprentice/Trainee
  • Matthew Fraser – VET Teacher/Trainer

Joining our individual award winners is Avidity Training and Development, who has been shortlisted for the Large Training Provider of the Year Award.

The awards will be presented at a Gala Dinner on Friday, 18 November 2022 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Agriculture technology training needs report

A new report examining the agri-tech training needs for Tasmanian agriculture has been released.

This report complements the existing North-West Agricultural Workforce Plan Consultancy Project (the NW Workforce Plan) and can be found on the Skills Tasmania website


Local People into Local Jobs initiative

The Tasmanian Government is providing more than $3.1 million to TasCOSS over three years to support Tasmania’s community services sector meet workforce needs estimates of an additional 4,000 jobs by 2024. 

This funding is supporting four key projects under the Local People into Local Jobs initiative:

  • Community Services-based Project Team (Workforce Coordination Project)
  • Community Services-based Workforce Ready Team
  • Community Services Sector Recruitment Campaign
  • Sector Workforce Development Fund

Advanced Manufacturing Action Plan released

The Tasmanian Advanced Manufacturing Action Plan 2024 provides a framework of actions and initiatives to support the state’s advanced manufacturing sector to grow its capability and to become more successful and sustainable.

The plan was initially released in 2020 and further work has now been undertaken to explore workforce development needs and opportunities.
