Visa, age, entry and employment requirements for learners
Vocational education and training (VET) is for everyone of any age and any background. VET has courses in many areas from agriculture to business, to building, construction and trades, childcare and allied health, engineering, creative industries, hospitality, IT and courses to get you started with study.
Everyone can use VET to get on track for their career. If learners come from non-English speaking backgrounds or have other requirements to ensure they are successful with their study then speak to a training provider to see what options are available.
VET qualifications and skill sets are generally available to anyone who lives in Tasmania, provided that your meet the entry requirements for the course.
However, there are some restrictions that you should be aware of:
- Not all learners on visas can access Tasmanian Government subsidised training. Information on which visas are eligible can be found here.
- There are minimum age, entry and employment requirements for learners wishing to enter into an apprenticeship or traineeship. See Conditions of apprenticeships and traineeships in Tasmania for further information.
- Learners wishing to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship that are on a visa must ensure that the visa they are on allows them to work and train in Australia for the duration (or length of time) of the relevant apprenticeship or traineeship. Durations are published here.
- International students wishing to study at TasTAFE should contact Government Education and Training International (GETI) to check which courses are available.
It is the role of the RTO to provide guidance to the learner on important information relating to their chosen VET course, and to maintain evidence in relation to eligibility or entry requirements.
