Tasmanian Training Awards 2008 (Nomination Booklet)The Tasmanian Training Awards are conducted annually by Skills Tasmania. The Board has a firm commitment to the development of a high quality, efficient and effective system of vocational education and training, a commitment that represents a major contribution to the development of competitive advantage for Tasmanian industry. The training awards are held to raise the profile of vocational education and training in Tasmania.

The Awards recognise, reward and honour the achievements of apprentices, trainees and vocational students for their endeavours in gaining the highest standards of knowledge and skills within their industry. They also recognise and honour the achievements of employers, small businesses and training organisations for their dedication to providing the highest quality training and enhancing the skills of the workforce in this State.

The Awards offer finalists the chance to gain personal satisfaction and opportunities in their industry, as well as the enhanced prestige of being part of an elite group of placegetters who unequivocally represent the State’s best in vocational education and training.

In 2008 fourteen awards are offered:

Business Awards:

  • TCCI Employer of the Year
  • TCCI Small Business of the Year
  • Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Training Initiative Award
  • ACPET Registered Training Organisation of the Year
  • STEPS Employment and Training Solutions VET in Schools Excellence Award

Student Awards:

  • Rio Tinto Alcan Apprentice of the Year
  • Aurora Trainee of the Year
  • Nyrstar Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year
  • Rotary Club of Deloraine Vocational Student of the Year
  • JobNet Tasmania VET in Schools Student of the Year
  • Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations School-based Apprentice of the Year

Equity Awards:

  • Business & Employment Equity Award for an Employer
  • Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Equity Award for an Individual - Apprentice or Trainee*
  • Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Equity Award for an Individual - Vocational Student*
     
    *Each year the Equity Individual Awards will focus on a different group of people under-represented in vocational education and training.  In 2008 the awards will be presented to mature age students (45 years and older) who have overcome significant challenges to successfully participate in vocational education and training.

Winners of the Apprentice, Trainee, Vocational Student, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Awards will represent the State at the 2008 Australian Training Awards. The School-based Apprentice of the Year Award recipient must be a Certificate III student to represent Tasmania at the Australian Training Awards.
Winning submissions in the business awards will be forwarded to the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) for assessment by a DEEWR nominated selection panel. Shortlisted finalists in each award will be interviewed and invited to attend the presentation dinner in November where winners will be announced.

There are currently no national equivalents to the Equity Awards or VET in Schools Student of the Year Award.

The Tasmanian Training Awards will be presented at a gala dinner on Friday 22 August in the Tasman Room at Wrest Point in Hobart.
