Partnerships that support the capacity of employers to attract, retain and develop their workforce and the capacity of individuals to be productive in the workforce contribute to workforce development.
Workforce development embraces a range of elements critical to Tasmania’s future economic growth, including innovation, productivity, skills formation, workforce planning, job design and high performance workplaces.
Central features of Workforce Development are:
- businesses being better at attracting and retaining skilled labour:
- partnerships between businesses, between businesses and training organisations and between these and government;
- businesses taking leadership and ownership of skill formation, particularly in relation to upskilling their existing workforce;
- integration of workforce and business planning;
- promoting the links between skill formation, innovation, productivity and business success; and
- eliminating the waste of people’s potential to participate in local business activity.
Skills Tasmania, in partnership with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism has developed a Workforce Development Plan. The Plan intends to increase the capacity of employers to attract, retain and develop their workforce; and to increase the capacity of individuals to participate and be productive in the workforce.

People Directions is in effect a ‘blueprint’ for what the Tasmanian State Service workforce, as a whole needs to do, now and into the future to address immediate and longer term people and workforce management issues.
It identifies and provides integrated and interdependent people management solutions and approaches for common people and workforce management issues faced across the State Service workforce as a whole, which are relevant at both whole-of-State Service and Agency levels.
