The global economic crisis has not significantly affected Tasmania’s unemployment rate which remains amongst the lowest in the nation. The realities of Tasmania’s ageing population have not changed and there are now more people leaving the workforce than entering it, creating significant skills gaps. A continued focus on lifting the participation rate through ensuring all Tasmanians have the opportunity to participate and contribute to society remains essential. Increasing opportunities for all Tasmanians to benefit from economic growth and fully participate in society is central to this Strategy.
Actions underpinning the increasing opportunity theme:
- Target specific groups of people for government funded training
- Build the literacy skills of Tasmanian adults and families
- Encourage more people to continue their education after year 10 and gain a meaningful qualification.
- Better connect Tasmanians with information, learning and other government and community services through Learning and Information Network Centres (LINCs)
- Find more Learners
- Link State and Commonwealth skills and employment opportunities
- Increase regional and community engagement in skills development
- Increase accessibility to Higher Level VET qualifications

“Increasing Opportunity means solving Tasmania’s literacy problems; it means increasing participation, retention and achievement for disadvantaged people; and it means transition and retention support for young people. Joined up government services will be critical to getting maximum benefits for the whole community.”
