Adult Literacy Support Officer Register for Adult Literacy Programs

Skills Tasmania has set up an ongoing register of qualified support officers with experience in adult literacy* teaching and assessment to support the Tasmanian Adult Literacy Action Plan; 26 TEN Grants Program.

It is expected that a number of full-time, part-time and casual positions will be available for the life of the Program (2015). 

Skills Tasmania uses the register to assist employers and community organisations to source support officers for their projects.  We are looking for support officers in every region in Tasmania.

Please note:

  • This register is an expression of interest process only; you will not be guaranteed a position by becoming part of the register.
  • You may need to apply for these positions when they become available.
  • In signing up to the register, you give your permission for your personal information to be passed onto employer or community organisations for the purpose of finding suitably qualified persons to support the 26 TEN Grants Program. We are looking for people with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Teaching or education qualifications (Cert IV or higher);
  • Experience teaching literacy, language and numeracy (LLN), especially to adults;
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding Adult Literacy; and
  • Knowledge of and an ability to apply the Australian Core Skills Framework or the ability to quickly gain this knowledge.

As a large component of the the Program involves teaching in the workplace we strongly encourage teachers with experience and knowledge of workplace practices to apply.

The Australian Core Skill Framework (ACSF) will be a key component to these positions.  There may be opportunities for professional development in the ACSF in 2011.  You can find more information about the ACSF at: www.deewr.gov.au/Skills/Programs/LitandNum/ACSF/Pages/default.aspx.

*In this context, adult literacy is defined as the five core skills identified in the Australian Core Skills Framework, (ACSF)  namely: Learning, Reading, Writing, Oral Communication and Numeracy.

These skills are essential for full participation in everyday life. They include the ability to:

  • Read, write, count and use written information;
  • Integrate speaking, listening, observing and critical thinking;
  • Perform basic mathematical operations;
  • Recognise the need for information and to locate, access, evaluate and apply that information; and
  • Use and understand information and communications technology.
