Training subsidies available to individuals and employers

Information regarding training incentives for both individuals and employers has been collated and organised into an easy to access table.

The information is grouped into sections containing Tasmanian incentives, Australian incentives and then other.

The table specifies the beneficiary of each incentive (employer or individual). A description of the incentive, and the amount, is included.

People receiving Centrelink allowances such as Newstart, Youth Allowance, a pension, Austudy or Abstudy, or dependants of a person receiving these allowances may be eligible for fee reduction for training by Registered Training Organisations (including TAFE).

There is a fee cap for identified traditional trade apprenticeships and traineeships and pre-employment trade courses.

A 50% fee reduction applies to courses which are of strategic importance to the State and in which business enterprises are experiencing difficulties attracting skilled applicants.

There is a fee cap of $990 for one calendar year of training ($275 with concession).

$300 in 2007 and 2008 for all 16-19 year olds in identified traditional trades training.

Fee cap for courses of strategic importance is $495.

Accommodation and travel allowances
for apprentices/trainees

Accommodation and travel allowances are available to apprentices and trainees who have an approved Tasmanian Training Contract in place, and are required to travel within Tasmania (or in some cases interstate) to attend structured training.

Accommodation Allowance of $22.00 per day up to a maximum of $110 per week. $50 per day is available for those required to travel interstate.

Travel allowance is paid at the rate of 16 cents per kilometre. Air fares for people on King or Flinders Islands or required to travel interstate may be available.

TAFE Tasmania Student Grant
A grant is available to full-time students to assist them in the purchase of books and compulsory items such as safety gear once all fees are paid. It may be available to recipients of Austudy, Youth Allowance and Newstart. Funding for this grant is limited. Application forms are available from the Customer Service Centre.

Standard Completion
Employers of Apprentices who successfully complete Cert III, IV or selected Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications may be eligible to receive either 100%, 75%, 50% or 25% or the $2,500 completion incentive.

Incentive for employing an Australian Apprentice in a School-based Apprenticeship at Cert ll to lV level and an incentive for continuing to employ that person after the completion of year 12

Drought Declared Incentive
The Declared Drought Area incentive is aimed at offsetting this potential crisis, to encourage primary producers who hold an Exceptional Circumstances Drought Area Certificate to continue to offer skill development and employment opportunities in a declared drought area.

Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support
Available to an employer who currently employs an Apprentice with a disability and has been assessed as a person requiring assistance. Evidence must be provided to support a claim for assistance.

An employer of an Australian Apprentice with a disability may receive wage support of either $104.30 for a full-time Australian Apprentice, or pro-rata amount for part time Apprentices.   Yes  
Assistance for Tutorial, Interpreter and Mentor Services
Payable directly to the Registered Training Provider in respect of an Apprentice with a disability who has been assessed as eligible for Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support and who requires additional assistance with off-the-job training. An Australian Apprentice with a disability may attract this form of assistance regardless of whether their employer receives Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support.

Financial assistance available for tutorial services for an Australian Apprentice is $38.50 an hour up to a maximum of $5,500 annually; and for interpreter/ mentor services, $38.50 an hour, up to a maximum of $5,500 annually. Yes    
Living Away From Home Allowance
Provides assistance to eligible Apprentices in their first three years of training, if they:
  • have to move away from their parents' or guardians' home in order to
  • take up or retrain an Australian Apprenticeship; or
  • receive essential supplementary on-the-job training with another employer
  • are homeless.

The Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarship provides incentive payments to eligible Apprentices in national skills needs industries where the employer is a small or medium-sized enterprise or a Group Training Organisation.

Apprentice Wage Top-Up
Apprentices aged under 30 on commencement of their Apprenticeship and who are in their first or second year of training at the Certificate III or IV level in a trade experiencing a skills shortage may be eligible for tax-free payments of $2000 paid in four $500 instalments.
