The following allowances are payable to apprentices and trainees who have an approved Tasmanian Training Contract in place, and are required to travel within Tasmania to attend off-the-job training. Allowances are designed to be a significant contribution towards the cost of travel and accommodation rather than a reimbursement of all costs.
Please note that no travel and accommodation support will be provided in the following circumstances:
- if the apprentice or trainee chooses to undertake training in another part of the State and there is a local registered training organisation available; or
- if the apprentice or trainee chooses to travel to another State when the training is available in Tasmania.
Also, as allowances are often paid prior to completion of the off-the-job training period, this office reserves the right to adjust any future claims or request a refund of any additional amounts paid.
It is the apprentice's/trainee's responsibility to book their own accommodation. Bookings should be made well in advance to ensure that either the Tasmanian Polytechnic Student Residence accommodation or alternative affordable accommodation can be obtained.
Accommodation allowance
$30.00 per day up to a maximum of $150.00 per week.
Apprentices and trainees are eligible for an accommodation allowance if they live 40 km or further from their training organisation.
Travel allowance
If accommodating overnight, a travel allowance of 20c per kilometre is payable when the return journey from the apprentice's/trainee's home to the site of off-the-job training is 42km or more return.
Apprentices and trainees are eligible for one return travel allowance from home to the training organisation each month. Therefore if training is for one month or less, only one return trip will be funded by Skills Tasmania, any other trips will be at the apprentice's or trainee's own expense.
If off-the-job training is for longer than one month, two return travel allowances will be paid by Skills Tasmania.
Air travel
Apprentices and trainees who live on either Flinders Island or King Island will be issued with a travel warrant to book a return airfare. Please ensure that you contact the Student Services Officer on (03) 6233 7750 to request the warrant one month prior to attending training.
Daily travel
A travel allowance of 20c per kilometre is payable when the return journey from the apprentice's/trainee's home to the site of off the job training is 42 km or more return. Apprentices and trainees residing on the West Coast will receive a travel allowance of 25c per kilometre to compensate for higher bus fares in that region.
Claiming your allowance:
Claim forms for these allowances are available from registered training organisations and should be completed on the first day of attendance to allow for prompt payment.
Please ensure that bank details are noted when claiming the initial allowance so that direct deposits can be made into the chosen bank account. Bank details include the name of the financial institution, the BSB number and Account Number.
If the bank details are either not provided or are incorrect, payments cannot be made. Also please make sure to note on the claim form if bank details have changed from the last claim.
