If you’re thinking of becoming an apprentice or trainees, Australian Apprenticeships Centres should be your first point of contact. Australian Apprenticeships Centres are contracted by the Australian Government to provide information, advice and support for those seeking to take up an Australian Apprenticeship as a career path, as well as for employers seeking to hire an apprentice or trainee.
Apprenticeships/traineeships can also be undertaken while still at school. School-based traineeships and apprenticeships have been designed to allow young people to commence employment based training while completing year 11 and 12 of their education. For further information contact a VET Coordinator or careers adviser at your school, or contact your local Australian Apprenticeships Centre.
Another pathway into a trades career is through pre-apprenticeship programs. Run by TAFE Tasmania, these courses will give you basic workplace skills and technical competencies. Pre-apprenticeship programs offer good opportunities for work placement as well as good employment prospects. By completing a pre-apprenticeship program you can receive credit towards your trade qualification. A pre-employment program also gives you an opportunity to work out if you are suited to the trade of your choice. TAFE and other RTOS also offer pre-employment programs for traineeships in a range of other industries and occupations.
