School-based traineeships and apprenticeships

A school-based traineeship or apprenticeship allows year 10, 11 and 12 students to undertake a VET qualification as a trainee or apprentice while still finishing their senior secondary education.

The school-based trainee or apprentice is completing half the work and half the VET qualification training, of a full time trainee or apprentice, each year of the school-based traineeship or apprenticeship.

A school-based trainee or apprentice is working 8 – 15 hours a week (one- two days) during term time and longer hours in the school holidays – a total of 720 – 900 hours in a year.

Any funded VET qualification currently available as a traineeship or apprenticeship can be offered as school-based.  The qualification undertaken will be dependent on the age and skill level of the candidate.

Year 10 school-based trainees and apprentices are encouraged to attend at least year 11.

The VET qualification undertaken as part of a school-based traineeship or apprenticeship replaces one or more school optional subjects.  The relevant school will organise the timetable individually for the school-based trainee or apprentice.

The Tasmania Training Agreements Committee (TTAC) administers all traineeships and apprenticeships in this State.  TTACs School-Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships Policy governs this program in Tasmania (see the TTAC page for the latest Policy and further information).
