Apprenticeships or traineeships are employment based training arrangements where an apprentice or trainee has the opportunity to combine practical experience in the workplace with structured training.
All trainees and apprentices are referred to as ‘Australian Apprentices’, a term that covers all apprenticeships and traineeships.
Apprenticeships and traineeships are a particular arrangement unique to the training system because they require an employment relationship. Under the apprenticeship and traineeship system, an employer hires an employee and then puts them through a structured training program. Apprenticeships and traineeships allow employees to combine practical workplace experience with formal, structured training that results in a recognised qualification. This means that apprentices and trainees are trained to understand the specific requirements of working in an industry and they develop the skills to match the needs of a particular business.
Apprenticeship occupations might include, for example, mechanics, hairdressers, chefs, carpenters, brick layers etc. A traineeship generally covers non-trade qualifications. Such occupations might include business administration, hospitality, multi media and IT, retail etc
Types of apprenticeships/traineeships
In Tasmania, an apprenticeship is generally up to 4 years, and most traineeships are 12-24 months. The approved apprenticeships/traineeships in Tasmania area lists all available funded, non-funded and school-based apprenticeship and traineeship qualifications in Tasmania.
