Managing apprentices/trainees

The day-to-day management of an apprentice and trainee involves meeting legal requirements such as record keeping, reporting and adhering to the training plan.

It also involves:

  • ensuring your apprentice or trainee fully understands their rights and obligations
  • providing a safe working environment
  • providing adequate support and encouragement to the apprentice or trainee
  • opportunities for the apprentice or trainee to practice new skills under proper supervision.

A copy of the National Code of Good Practice for Australian Apprenticeships can be downloaded from the Australian Apprenticeships website.

Dealing with problems

If problems arise with the apprentice or trainee, ensure that the Australian Apprenticeships Centre (AAC) or your business deals with them straight away.

Ending an apprenticeship/traineeship

Apprenticeships and traineeships terminate upon completion or by approval of an application to cancel the training contract.

If you need advice or assistance at any time during the apprenticeship or traineeship, contact your local Australian Apprenticeships Centre or a Training Consultant from Skills Tasmania.
