Completing a training contract when the training contract commenced prior to 1.1.07
Four weeks prior to the nominal completion date of the training contract, Skills Tasmania will contact your registered training organisation to confirm that the training has been completed.
The registered training organisation (RTO) must confirm with Skills Tasmania that the apprentice or trainee has received all the required on- and off-the-job training and successfully completed all units of competency to achieve the qualification.
The RTO will then issue the apprentice or trainee with a certificate listing the qualification achieved. Skills Tasmania will advise the employer and apprentice or trainee that the training contract has been successfully completed.

Completing a training contract when the training contract commenced post 1.1.07
For all training contracts signed prior to the 1 January, 2007 Skills Tasmania will contact your registered training organisation four weeks prior to the nominal completion date of the training contract to confirm that the training has been completed.
The Registered Training Organisation (RTO) must notify Skills Tasmania that the apprentice or trainee has met all the requirements of the qualification to complete the training contract. This includes on- and off-the-job training.
Skills Tasmania will advise the parties to the training contract when a notification of completion is received prior to the nominal completion date. They may or may not wish to early complete the training contract or they may wish to leave the contract in place until the nominal completion date. Both parties to the training contract need to agree to an early completion.
For those training contracts signed post 1 January, 2007 the completion process is automatically initiated on the receipt of the notification of completion from the Registered Training Organisation. This initiative is part of The Council of Australian Governments, which comprises the Prime Minister, all State and Territory Premiers/First Ministers and the president of the Australian Local Goverment Association. They agreed "By December 2006 all Governments will have put in place arrangements that allow apprentices and trainees to work as qualified tradesmen and tradeswomen as soon as they have demonstrated competency to industry standards, without having to wait out a set time or make special application". This intiative is explained in more detail in the Important changes to the national training system to commence from 1 January 2007 [Word 37.5KB] document.
It is extremely important that employers, apprentices and trainees take an active role in the training and assessment and are clear that once all the requirements of the qualification are met that not only has the training been complete, but also the training contract will finish allowing an apprentice or trainee to receive their qualification and work in their chosen career which may be as a qualified tradesperson. In this regard it is important to note that apprentices and trainees must demonstate competence to the standard required in the workplace against each unit of competency before they are entitled to be awarded their qualification.

Cancelling a training contract
Either party to the training contract - employer or employee - can request to have the contract cancelled.
If the apprenticeship or traineeship is still within the stipulated probation period, the contract can be legally cancelled by either party, to do so contact your AAC or one of Skills Tasmania's Training Consultants on 1800 655 846.
The cancellation should be considered as a last resort, particularly in cases where there may be difficulties between the parties and/or the registered training organisation (RTO).
Reasons for cancellation of the contract might be due to:
- business closure;
- relocation;
- incompatibility.
Your local AAC can provide assistance to try to resolve the issue and ensure a successful completion of the training contract. It is important that discussion between the parties takes place prior to cancellation.
If you cannot resolve the issue but are able to reach a mutual and voluntary agreement to cancel the contract, both parties must complete and sign the required cancellation form in the presence of the AAC who will forward the form to Skills Tasmania.
If you are not able to reach mutual agreement, Skills Tasmania can be contacted to attempt to resolve it. You must inform your AAC of the problem or contact a Skills Tasmania Training Consultant on 1800 655 846.
